Soweto:
A History - Angus Gibson, raised in Durban, visited a friend in Johannesburg,
a city defined by a white ridge of mine dumps that mark where the gold lay. On
a Sunday afternoon, a young Angus walked across one such mine dump to be startled
by what lay on the other side - Soweto, an unseen city of black people insulated
from the white enclaves.
Since
then, he has been driven to show the unseen and articulate the unsaid about this
country. SOWETO, A HISTORY, a six part documentary series on a vibrant and resilient
city of over four million people, was a natural consequence of ordinary people
and has turned a fragile oral history into a lasting asset.
The
negatives for these incredible photographs featured were discovered by Angus,
abandoned in the backroom of an old photo studio whilst doing research for SOWETO:
A HISTORY.
Whilst
Angus was trying to persuade the South African National Gallery to purchase this
unique collection, the photographer died. His family destroyed the collection
not realising it's value.
